Advocating for the League’s Public Policy Priorities
The League encourages everyone to stay informed and participate in advocacy by contacting legislators and engaging with the legislative process.
To advocate at the Iowa Legislature, the League follows a structured approach:
- Local Advocacy: Local Leagues build relationships with legislators, meet with them after elections, and discuss legislative priorities.
- Communication: Members stay in contact with legislators via emails, phone calls, and attend forums and events to engage with legislators and the community.
- Capitol Day: League members visit the Capitol to meet legislators and observe House and Senate proceedings.
- Public Engagement: The League uses letters to the editor, social media, and partnerships with other organizations to promote issues.
- State Advocacy Group: The State Board created a group to coordinate advocacy efforts, collaborate with lobbyists, and engage with the National League of Women Voters.
- Legislature Website: The Iowa Legislature website is a key tool for tracking bills, viewing legislative debates, and contacting committee members individually.
- Education: The League provides an instructional video to help members navigate the Legislature website and stay informed.
